TEACHING, LEARNING AND RESEARCH PROGRAMME
Zoology is a branch of biology that focuses on animal forms and their life. The curriculum broadly envisages the subjects Viz., Systematics, Biodiversity, Evolution, Ecology, comparative
Anatomy, Physiology, Immunology, Reproductive & Developmental biology, Molecular genetics & genetic engineering, Health & nutrition, toxicology, research methodology, related areas like
Biochemistry, bioinformatics and biostatistics and many more. All these are studied in diverse life forms from invertebrates to vertebrates including human beings. The learning process includes lecturing of subject to professing the philosophy. It includes participative learning from teacherstudent interaction, students’ mode of conceptualizing, seminars, debates, projects, ICT and Documentary observation-based audio visuals, along with out bound skills for the learning edge. Some of the concepts include inter-species interactions to neural mechanisms; molecular biology to vertebrate evolution; genetic foundations of behavior to the importance of biodiversity and beneficial organisms, biology of diseases, drug toxicity and mechanisms to environmental hazards, endocrine biology to human diseases and many more. Animal Science today has significant role in tackling research problems concerned with human biology and the study of animal biology provides insight into understanding fundamental of existence of life to understanding the disease aspects, survival and solution to the recent endemic and pandemic situations. The department also assists in orientation to UGC CSIR-NET exams, placement for prospective life Science jobs.
UG PROGRAMME DETAILS
As per New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020); Bachelors of Science (B.Sc.,) is a fulltime undergraduate (UG) course which can be pursued by a student after completing a preuniversity/10+2 / equivalent examinations. The duration of the B.Sc., course is 3 years consisting 6 semesters (Degree awarding) with additional 1 year of option to do research work consisting of 2 semesters for awarding Honors degree. The student can choose Zoology as their major paper along with another subject of choice as major paper, an open elective paper, and other recommended papers in the syllabus. The language papers include English and any one of the languages that is compulsory.
Zoology as major paper: The curricular scope of NEP envisages in-depth learning of prescribed domains of zoology along with practical experiments. The curricular domains are as
mentioned above for an UG learner however, enhancement ofstudent participation is ensured through seminar presentation, assignment writing, field visit, study tours, projects, statistical and software programme skills along with sports and Cultural leadership training.
Careers in zoology ad allied life science streams:
The careers span from teaching, research to software career in life science divisions but nothing stops a good thinker to be an entrepreneur, for M.Sc., Zoology scope is aplenty and it is also expected to increase in the upcoming years. Zoologist/Animal Scientists are in high demand in the fields of neuro science to Artificial intelligence; conservation biology to stem cell &molecular biology. Some of the thrust areas and opportunities include,
• Basic and Applied Biology research
• R&D labs of drugs and pharmaceuticals
• In- silico research
• Allied human health services
• Soft ware divisions in life sciences
• Graphical and content developers
• Oncology, epidemiology, diabetes research
• Developing tools and techniques for life science and animal Science research and
application
• Entrepreneurship in developing gadgets for diagnosis and Animal rearing
