Eligibility
The minimum qualification should be 10+2 with ‘pass’ result, with PUC/ISC/CBSE or an equivalent. And, a Bachelor's degree in any field.

The Department of English, Bangalore City University was established in 2018. The Post Graduate program of the English Department, Bengaluru City University, is one of the strongest, most diverse, and most intellectually exciting in the country. Consistently highly ranked across fields, it receives over 100 applications for admission each year and enrols an entering class of 30 – 40 students. We offer courses that incorporate the literary canon, investigate various modes of inquiry, and teach a range of critical methodologies.
A variety of field-specific research centres, colloquia, lecture series, and informal reading groups provide important adjunct experiences to the formal classroom. Post Graduate students are welcomed to the lectures and conferences conducted by the Medieval and Renaissance Centre and the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Studies Centre. The Department also sponsors a monthly lecture series by distinguished theorists and scholars on the futures of the discipline and conducts seminars which include, both the traditional values and the exciting innovations that are reshaping its future.
Our proximity to several important research centres – with the coming of NEP – 2020 we are expanding our department offerings in new and emerging interdisciplinary areas. Post Graduate students are encouraged to work closely with their advisors throughout their studies in shaping a program responsive to their particular interests. The English Department heavily values training and supervised experience in teaching as an integral part of the preparation we offer for the profession.

At present, the Department has a team of Assistant Professors and three guest faculties who stand committed to the cause of quality teaching and research. There are 38 PG students in the Department for the academic year 2021.

Objectives

Language Lab
The Department has a language lab equipped with multiple computers, handsets and a projector to facilitate language learning, where students can get access to audio or audio-visual materials. The Department also holds regular movie screenings to enhance the learning experience of Film Studies. This technology-enhanced teaching environment has helped the students get a more effective and engaging education, in comparison to one limited to a traditional text-book or lecture based class.
Library
There are over a thousand books in the library, where the students can get access to a wide range of books beyond their syllabus. It also houses multiple newspapers, magazines and journals in the domain. The students also get access to reference materials for competitive exams like UGC NET, SLET etc.
Sahitya Akademi
The Campus also houses the Southern Regional Office Library of the Sahitya Akademi, where the students get access to a multilingual library. It has a rich collection of books on literature and allied subjects in English and various other languages. It is particularly known for its huge collection of books on literary theories and criticism, women’s studies, cultural histories and translational studies.
Literary Seminar
The Department organizes inter-colligate and national level seminars to provide the students with an enriching experience where several scholarly speakers help them acquire the analytical aesthetics of art acutely. The Department organised “Lumiere O’Lit”, a two day seminar on “Exploring Cultures and Society in the 21st Century Literature” , on September 12 and 13, 2022, with 2 keynote speakers and 6 distinguished subject experts.
Meet the Author
Meet The Author, is an initiative planned and organized by the Department of Studies in English, to provide a practical and firsthand experiential learning opportunity to the Postgraduate students of Bengaluru City University and it’s Affiliated Colleges, about the process of writing and publishing from well renowned Authors. The students availed an exciting opportunity to meet a Bestselling Author, “SHWETA TANEJA”, on August 26, 2022.
Educational Trip
The Department organizes field trips to better acquaint the students with the real world, and prepare them for their lives as professionals. The Department organized a one day educational excursion to Mysore, on August 20,2022. The places visited include the renowned author, R. K. Narayan’s Home, Dhwanayaloka Library, Kuvempu Lake, Gaganachukki Waterfalls and KRS Dam.
Guest Lectures
The Department organises special lectures by eminent personalities and subject experts, to provide the students with an opportunity to broaden their horizon of knowledge and deepen their understanding. The last Guest Lecture was delivered by Dr Fayyaz Ahmed Ilkal, from Rani Chanamma University, Belgaum, on the topic “Research Methodology and Writing”.

A day to celebrate our hardworking Professors who inspire and guide us at every turn.
World Poetry Day Celebration - 2022
The Department celebrated World Poetry Day, on March 21, 2022. The event included a Poetry Competition where the students had an exciting opportunity to pen their thoughts and win recognition. The final celebrations included a small attempt to revive oral traditions of poetry recital by the students and an invaluable addresses by the judge, Prof V S Sreedhara, Dr Leonard D Souza.
Social Media Presence
There is a student run Instagram page @pendom_literopia, a space for literary exploration and innovation. The students use it to preserve the valuable memories of their journey and to connect with likeminded people and expand their literary network.
Friday Phantom
A weekly event to provide the students with a platform to showcase their talents and gain experience, knowledge, build their confidence and learn public speaking skills. The events so far include student presentations on a variety of topics, a debate on Artificial Intelligence and a movie screening of Top Gun.
